Features

The HideMyAss VPN app for Android offers users great security features, such as a kill switch and the ability to register your own proxy server (on Plus option only). However, this is not available on all devices. If you’re using an older Android device, then you will have to use the basic app and manually configure your VPN settings.

If desired, you can also configure automatic switching between these servers based upon your location; however we did not test this feature during our review period to determine if it works like intended from what we’ve seen elsewhere regarding automated switching between locales using different regions/locations within countries (such as China’s “Great Firewall” blocking all internet traffic except through Hong Kong-based servers).

Either way, HideMyAss does provide some customization options including retaining connections even after exiting apps via its Hotspot Mode option if desired; however note that while many providers allow Hotspot Mode functions on their own platforms by default and fewer require manual configuration settings before activating them by default (considering they offer both free and paid-for plans), none do so quite as well here compared to other providers who were reviewed in prior years’ reviews of VPNs for mobile devices.

For instance only Private Internet Access allows you to set up Hotspot Mode right out of the box without requiring any extra steps myself personally found required me go into each individual app individually though I was able stop using those particular apps altogether once I had installed my preferred premium service plan anyway since sharing access among multiple applications no matter how private they might otherwise make themselves seems counter productive considering more than likely there are better alternatives available regardless.

Interface

The interface is quite easy to use and intuitive; there are only a few options available, but these can easily be accessed by tapping on the menu. The app also offers some advanced features which is ideal for those who want more control over their VPN service.

This app is fairly simple, but if you’re not familiar with VPN clients it can be a little confusing at first. The GUI layout isn’t quite as user friendly compared to other apps on the market (there are several “vPNs” such as Hotspot Shield and TunnelBear that have much more user-friendly interfaces), but once you get used to all of the buttons and options this is a fairly easy app to use.

Once you launch the app, it will begin checking for new servers, which can take a while. I would recommend using your VPN server with a dynamic DNS service like No-IP or dynDNS if you want one-click access to all of your VPN’s servers (more on that later). If you choose to not use automatic updates then this is easier said than done; sometimes these updates are really slow and they fail on occasion, so be patient if you experience issues.
